Loyalty Lacking in Simon and Vidmer

Posted 10-13-1999

We are less than three weeks from the election and what two Democrats are working hard for Republican Commissioner candidate Maryln Davis? My colleague Dick Vidmer and my predecessor Ted Simon are out there busy as beavers trying to reel in all their buddies. Can you believe it? Do you think they care about the taxpayers, good government, or the Democratic Party?

Well I believe it, because I know these two guys don't care about the taxpayers, our party, or our government. For ten years Ted put his ego ahead of the party and pouted because he didn't pick John Regoli's replacement. That replacement ended up being Mr. Vidmer. Ted assured division in our party by picking candidates to run with in the 1987 and 1991 elections. It gave Vidmer the perfect excuse to team up with Republican Terry Marolt and forge a partnership that exists today. Guess who's candidacy got Dick and Ted back together? Yours truly!

After all those years of fighting they said they were really friends after all. Of course no one believed them and Ted lost and became our party chairman. So the former party leader, who criticized Vidmer for working with Republicans, is now throwing parties for a Republican Commissioner candidate. He tried to throw the party for Davis and Democrat Tom Ceraso, but to Tom's credit he said he wouldn't attend. What could motivate a man who built his reputation as a loyal Democrat, to now work openly for a Republican? Could it be those behind the scene operatives who benefit from the existing business arrangements? They want business as usual to continue and have given Ted his orders.

With Vidmer it is no surprise that he is speaking for Republican candidates. He's never been loyal to our party anyway. Four years ago it was a farce when he and I would be at events and he would be giving a phony rah-rah speech about Democratic unity and then I'd find out he was pushing for Terry. For years he also said he wanted to work with another Democrat but Ted just wouldn't do it. Well I won and guess what? Dick and Terry kept making political decisions together and Vidmer didn't care about the party he used to build a political career.

Why am I even talking about these guys and how significant are their actions? I'm talking about these guys because I want readers to know what these two supposed Democrat leaders are up to and that they will do and say what they are instructed to do. The impact I think will be minimal. Maryln Davis may win the election, but it won't be because of these two guys. But they will be telling her, "look what we did for you." They will try to do the same with Tom Ceraso too. But these days, political insiders do not control enough votes to change election results and it is determined by the great majority that no political group controls.

It is almost sad to see Ted winding things down like he's doing. He seemed to have some dignity when he stood his ground with Vidmer's backers, now he's one of them. Dick just thinks he is always fooling someone and I hope the people he's done so much service to, remember him when January rolls around.
