Misplaced Focus?

Posted 2-9-2004

I promise. This will be the ONLY time I write about the great Janet Jackson breast revelation. The whole thing is so preposterous I cannot believe we are in the 21st century, and some people are upset about a breast being shown on television.

Just who are these people that are outraged? The ones who have still never bought cable television? I mean all one has to do is surf the cable channels, and you'll see much more sexual content. During the Super Bowl itself, there were advertisements for erectile dysfunction. How many beer advertisements were there with scantily clad girls in them? So if that didn't make those same people squeamish, why did Janet Jackson's briefly exposed breast?

What was truly revolting was Kid Rock even being on the halftime show. That guy must have the best manager on Earth to get that kind of exposure. It was after a few seconds of his performance that I decided to take the garbage out. So I missed the whole Janet/Justin Timberlake caper anyway.

I think what the issue brings to light is this society's warped sense of propriety. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants to investigate the issue, fine CBS, and probably lock Janet up with brother Michael. Yet, the FCC will let unregulated violence appear day and night on television without a worry to what effect it has on society. They allow barely masked sexual innuendo to be a part of every network sitcom, and anything goes on cable television. But, the exposure of a breast is reason for concern? They should have been concerned about the quality of the entertainment, but apparently no standards exist in that area.

I know the vestiges of this society's puritanical roots still exist, but outrage over the exposure of a woman's breast doesn't border on the ridiculous, it is just plain stupid. I'm sure the FCC has many important things to work on, like figuring out how to better open the door for a few elite friends of Bush to buy up all radio and television stations. But if they waste public dollars investigating this event, they should all be ordered to listen to Kid Rock's performance over and over again.

The real travesty of the whole episode is the game itself has been lost in the hoopla over the exposed breast. It was one of the best, most exciting, most competitive Super Bowls ever. And, all the news media seems to want to talk about is JJ's boob. Tom Brady played an unbelievable game, so did Jake Delhomme, but other than the post-game analysis on ESPN, you'd think the game stunk instead of the half time show. If the FCC wants to investigate something, find out how Kid Rock, Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson, and P Diddy got on the half time show anyway, now that is a scandal!
