Regola, The Hypocrite
Posted 10-4-2004
I can't take it any longer! If I get one more mailer paid for by the
Republican State Committee telling me about Bob Regola and "our values," I'm
going to throw up. If there is a bigger hypocrite running for office this
year, I'd like to meet him.
First of all, a year ago at
this time Mr. Regola was a Democrat, campaigning hard for his handpicked
Democratic candidate for Hempfield Township supervisor. If that person had
won, would Mr. Regola have abandoned him and still switched parties? If Mr.
Regola had such conservative values in 2002, why did he strongly campaign
for Ed Rendell, the more liberal of the two Democratic candidates for
governor? Bob Casey is anti-choice on the abortion issue, like Regola claims
to be now. Bob Casey was strongly supported by the National Rifle
Association, unlike Rendell, who supported certain gun control measures.
Yet, the supposedly clear-thinking Regola chose to actively campaign for
Rendell. After the election, Governor Rendell came here and did a fundraiser
for Bob Regola; that shows how closely involved he must have been in
Rendell's campaign. Yet the man with "our values" took that money raised
from Democrats, many who contributed to him because of the presence of the
incoming governor, turned around and is now using some of that very money
against our Democratic State Senator Allen Kukovich. Now that's integrity,
isn't it?
And, let's examine the slick
mailers paid for primarily by Republican money that has come from outside of
our county. So, he's never raised taxes as a Hempfield supervisor? And, just
what services are they providing? They have no police force like North
Huntingdon, Penn Township, or the City of Greensburg. So, the rest of us
subsidize their state police coverage, so that Mr. Regola can run around
claiming that he has never raised taxes.
Mr. Regola claims to be
"pro-life". Well, you cannot make that claim if you support the death
penalty and the unjust war in Iraq. No longer are Catholic politicians going
to get a free pass from the rest of us if they only oppose reproductive
freedom and think it is okay to kill under other circumstances. There are no
caveats to the commandment "Thou Shall Not Kill".
Also, I want Mr. Regola to
tell the overwhelming number of Pennsylvania's senior citizens, who have
toiled long and hard to enjoy retirement, that they should not have the
right to gamble within the borders of our commonwealth. Tell them that they
are not wise enough to spend their hard-earned money and that they should
have to take their entertainment dollars and travel out-of-state to spend
them. The gambling bill that Mr. Regola claims is so "corrupt" because it
came from Philadelphia could not have passed without the Republican party's
blessing and votes. We all know who controls both houses of the legislature
in Harrisburg.
Senator Allen Kukovich has
been his own man when it comes to voting in Harrisburg for many years. In
fact, he has done so to his own detriment within the Democratic Party at
times and has been branded a "maverick" because he champions the causes of
the people with no voice and little influence. Does anyone really think Bob
Regola has the intestinal fortitude to stand up to the Republican leadership
of Senators Jubilier and Piccola after they bankrolled his election against
Kukovich?
Now for those "values" Mr.
Regola talks about in his mailer -- those pressing issues we face each day
in Pennsylvania. He supports the Defense of Marriage Act? If he really wants
to defend marriage, propose outlawing divorce. That action will protect the
sanctity of marriage far greater than keeping gay people from being joined
in a civil union.
And have you seen anyone in
Pennsylvania burning a flag lately? This is a "burning" issue with Mr.
Regola? Of course, there's the critical issue that shows Mr. Regola has "our
values". He wants to make English the official language of Pennsylvania.
What do "yunz" think of that?
