Random Thoughts from a Hot Summer Day...

Posted 6-12-2007

I know this is an election year, and we are in the middle of a race for re-election, but things have quieted down so much, there isn't very much to say about the Commissioners' race right now.

I do know one thing; no one stole Virginia Oplinger's signs. They are still up along every exit ramp. Since she never took them down, the grass has grown above them.

Talking about her votes now is kind of irrelevant. The primary is over and done with, and we know the candidates for the General Election. We'll see who gets the votes that didn't go the winners' way in the primary.

I guess it will come down to the Republican candidates' record as part-time elected officials in two townships versus ours running a $334 million non-profit.

I'm confessing right now, I have read Perry Christopher's Blog. I know, it is a sad commentary on how boring my life has become. I'm not interested in his musical tastes or what places he has visited recently, but it is amusing to watch the political warfare back and forth. The criticism of Tom Ceraso and me is interesting (not by Perry because all he does is quote the Tribune Review) because some of it is so far-fetched. But I did like the comments about who really runs Hempfield Township on a daily basis, my former assistant Rob Ritson. I liked the theory that if he was the right man for that job, where did he get his qualifications for that job? Working for Westmoreland County. So what happened, we knew what we were doing when he worked here and now we don't?

Well we finally know where George Bush is popular, Albania. The President with the 32% approval rating was mobbed by pro-American Albanians as if he personally liberated them from a communist dictatorship. It was funny how the Albanians could get so close to him. Heck, here in the USA, the Secret Service would bust heads if you tried to touch Bush. Since he cannot seek re-election here, he should move to Albania and run there. If he takes Rove with him, they'll figure out how to steal the election there and he might have a positive legacy there, since he will not have one here.

The Alberto Gonzales controversy has gone on long enough. Every President has cut lose people in their administrations when they have become an embarrassment. Why not Bush? Can't he admit when things have gone wrong? Anyone who has watched Gonzales in hearings has to admit his evasiveness was terrible for the chief law enforcement official in the USA. Of course you have to watch the "Daily Show" to actually see any details of the hearings. But Gonzales and his deputies cannot get their stories straight and his responses have exasperated Democrats and Republicans alike.

Why can't the Republicans take Joe Liebermann once and for all? Now the phony Democrat says it would be okay to bomb Iran. Did he feel the same way when Israel developed nuclear weapons? Or how about China or India? I don't know how the global community decides who is allowed to possess nuclear weapons and who is not. I'm tired of all the saber rattling about Iran. If we should have learned one lesson from invading Iraq, it should be that we cannot dictate to other nations how to behave. Sure we can bomb them into ruin, but we are not going to make them behave according to our wishes.

And finally, I am looking forward to debates this year for the commissioners' race. I hope some non-partisan group(s) sponsors them. My only caveat is that I hope they are televised because historically, the only people in the audience are supporters of the candidates. I also hope the format allows for questions that aren't given to us in advance, and real debate between the candidates.
