Campaign 2007

November 7, 2007 -- Thank You

Victory is never achieved alone, yet there are far too many people to thank individually. I want to thank the voters of Westmoreland County for entrusting me with the responsibility of serving as your commissioner. It is a responsibility that I take very seriously.

  • Thank you for believing in good government. And in me.

  • Thank you for voting for my colleague, Tom Ceraso, who is a valuable partner in governing our county.

  • Thank you for recognizing the work we have done to make county government more efficient, open and responsive.

  • Thank you for enduring the cold weather on Election Day.

  • Thank you for rejecting the negative assault put forth by our Republicans opponents, using money from Harrisburg politicians.

  • Thank you for knowing better than to give credence to the daily drivel in the Tribune-Review.

  • And of course, a very special thank you to my family who endures this tiring, and sometimes harsh, election process with patience and grace.

October 25, 2007 -- New Information Further Implicates George Dunbar In Wright Industries' Bankruptcy -- A recent filing in the bankruptcy proceedings of Wright Industries further implicates Republican county commissioner candidate George Dunbar in the company's collapse (U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Western District of Pennsylvania, no. 07-21384). And now a former worker is explaining the hardships he and his coworkers endured.

October 22, 2007 -- Kim Ward Enjoys Benefits At Retirees' Expense -- Kim Ward is continuing to fight court battles to deny retirees the healthcare benefits that she enjoys for free.

October 21, 2007 -- Not All Ideas Are Good Ideas -- Recently, at the urging of the Tribune-Review, our opponents felt compelled to present a "new" idea. Yes, after an editorial in the Tribune Review early last week criticizing the lack of dialogue in the County Commissioners' race, our Republican opponents put forth their "new" idea. The idea is a non-binding referendum before any future tax increases in county government.

October 16, 2007 -- Ducking Debates? -- I originally had planned to write about the recent candidates forum in Donegal and how I am looking forward to more, particularly debate formats. But recently, I've learned that it appears that there will be none. "Scheduling conflicts" by our opponents have apparently put an end to the only scheduled debate.

September 11, 2007 -- Glaring Weaknesses Exposed in Ward-Dunbar Campaign -- Recent efforts by the political team of Kim Ward and George Dunbar to jumpstart their campaigns for county commissioner have exposed glaring weaknesses in their knowledge of county government, their qualifications to govern, and temperament to hold public office.

March 10, 2007 -- Westmoreland County Dems Back Balya and Ceraso  -- Incumbent Westmoreland County commissioners Tom Balya and Tom Ceraso won the endorsement of the county Democratic Party Committee on Saturday, trouncing the candidacy of Mike O'Barto, of Unity Township.

January 31, 2007 -- Tom Balya Announces Reelection Run for Westmoreland County Commissioner: Three-Term Commissioner Delivers Leadership, Accountability and Results -- Gathered with family, friends and supporters, Westmoreland County Commissioner Tom Balya today announced he will seek a fourth term as commissioner in the 2007 Municipal Election. "It is an honor and a privilege to serve the residents of Westmoreland County," Commissioner Balya said. "I have always taken seriously my pledge to put the interests of our residents above all else, and I reiterate that commitment today as I humbly ask the good people of this county for their continued trust and support."
