Volunteers Needed at Westmoreland Manor

Posted 09-10-2002

Westmoreland County Commission Chairman Tom Balya today urged residents to join the volunteer corps at Westmoreland Manor.

"Volunteering at Westmoreland Manor is community service at its finest and a great way to give back to our elderly residents who have done so much for us all," Balya said. "Westmoreland Manor, like other facilities throughout the country, is feeling the pinch from a nationwide nursing shortage. Volunteers can help fill that gap by providing a variety of important services for residents, which helps free up the nursing staff to perform more pressing duties. We're looking for volunteers of all ages, like members of church groups, civic organizations, and social clubs, as well as individual citizens.

"I also thank those who have faithfully volunteered at the Manor and ask them to continue their service," Balya said. "Both the residents and staff greatly appreciate your help."

Volunteers at the Manor provide such important services as staffing the snack bar and gift shop, providing hospitality carts to the nursing units, visiting with residents, escorting residents to clinics and therapies, and assisting in the administrative offices.

Those interested in volunteering should contact Stanley Povich or the volunteers office at Westmoreland Manor at 724-830-4000.

The Westmoreland Manor Volunteers have been assisting at the facility since 1969, and Manor staff conducts training. There are approximately 100 registered volunteers, though not all of them are active.

Founded in 1850, Westmoreland Manor is a 464-bed facility serving those who require nursing care and rehabilitation. Westmoreland Manor is committed to providing a high caliber of health care to residents to meet their individual physical, psychological, and spiritual needs. The Manor provides long-term care, short-term rehabilitation, and respite care, and assists residents to reach the highest level of functioning of which they are capable in a clean, safe, and secure environment.

Westmoreland Manor is located on South Grande Boulevard, off U.S. Route 119, in Hempfield Township.
