Westmoreland County Dedicates Improvements at Westmoreland
Manor, Introduces New Eagle Tree Apartments
Posted 05-12-2003
Westmoreland County Commissioners today joined staff and residents of Westmoreland
Manor, the county's nursing home, to dedicate a new lobby and introduce the new Eagle Tree
Apartments.
"For decades
Westmoreland Manor has served county seniors well with quality and skilled nursing
care," Chairman Tom Balya said. "Over the last several years, we have looked at
new ways to better serve our seniors. Today's event is a milestone in our efforts. County
seniors now have a new independent living option at the Eagle Tree Apartments, and our new
lobby is something that all county residents can be proud of."
"As the county's
senior population continues to grow, it is important that we meet that demand,"
Commissioner Tom Ceraso said. "These new additions at the Manor will not only benefit
current residents, but those who may need nursing care in the future. These improvements
go a long way toward ensuring that Westmoreland Manor will be a viable option for seniors
for years to come."
Today's dedication also
included remarks by Manor resident Elsie Paradis and new Eagle Tree Apartment tenant
Russell Funk.
The lobby renovation to the
Westmoreland Manor Entrance adds 858 square feet to the previous main entrance and
includes a glass-covered canopy that connects the drop-off area to the main entrance
addition. Once inside, the sunlit, open plan includes a 60-percent enlargement of the
Snack Shop, a larger waiting area, and a spacious new reception area. The renovation also
provides more space for security and reception personnel by providing separate, but
adjoining, spaces.
Located next to the new
security office, the relocated resident smoking room is centrally located to ensure
constant supervision. A garden and memorial park was created between the new addition and
the existing building in what was once unused space.
The 21 Eagle Tree Apartment
units are a unique combination of privacy and security. Each apartment is fully furnished
and includes a refrigerator, microwave, and utilities. Tenants experience such amenities
as weekly housekeeping, room maintenance, laundry services, and kitchen privileges, and
emergency call bells are conveniently located in every apartment. Additional services
include medication reminders, personal reminders, and special diets.
"For too long, many
seniors who did not require nursing care, but needed some assistance, had no
alternatives," said Westmoreland Manor Administrator Maggie Harper. "The Eagle
Tree Apartments fill that void. Tenants have the privacy and safety they want, and they
also can become part of a new community through our many recreation activities and regular
church services."
Monthly rates range from
$575 to $1,025, depending on the size of the apartment.
The Eagle Tree Apartments
were built at a cost of $922,235, which was paid fully by the County Commissioners'
Association of Pennsylvania through the Program for Alternative Community Care. The
construction cost of the entrance renovation was $442,811, and was funded through
Westmoreland Manor's funded depreciation account that is partially earmarked for facility
upgrades and renovations.
Louis F. Gilberti of
Pittsburgh was the architect for both the lobby renovations and the Eagle Tree Apartments.
Shoff Construction and Design, Inc. of North Huntingdon was the general contractor for the
lobby. Martik Brothers, Inc. of Finleyville served as general contractor for the
apartments.
