Commissioners Balya, Ceraso Support New Westmoreland County Commission for Women

Posted 05-13-2003

Westmoreland County Commissioners Tom Balya and Tom Ceraso today expressed their support for the new Westmoreland County Commission for Women.

"The Commission for Women is a great forum to bring together women from all walks of life to discuss and analyze the important issues that affect our families and advance the cause of equal treatment for all," Commissioner Balya said. "County government is the primary provider of human services in the county, and the input from the Women's Commission will help us better focus our efforts. I applaud their initiative and look forward to working with them."

The commission serves as an advocate for women's rights and works to ensure that women and girls in the county have equal opportunity and treatment in all aspects of life.

"I strongly support the Commission for Women and wish them well in their mission," Commissioner Ceraso said. "The commission will help combine the resources of other existing organizations to maximize the dissemination of important information, such as Amber Alerts, domestic violence, and our Balanced and Restorative Justice program."

The mission of the Westmoreland County Commission for Women is to foster leadership, provide awareness of existing family services, promote the development of resources, and advocate equal access to resources to enhance the lives of women and families. The commission is focusing on such issues as education, employment, children and youth services, childcare, discrimination, domestic abuse, and sexual harassment.

The Westmoreland County Commission for Women is the first county women's commission in southwest Pennsylvania. The commission recently filed papers with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to formalize its inception.

While the Commission focuses on what are traditionally considered "women's issues," meetings are open to everyone. The commission meets quarterly at various locations throughout the county.

Those interested in membership should contact Angela Rose-O’Brien at 724-836-6444 or Mary Catherine Motchar at 724-832-2506.
