Westmoreland County Names New Director of
Childrens Bureau
Posted 10-02-2003
The Westmoreland County Board of Commissioners today named Marilyn L. McSparrin as
Director of the County Children's Bureau.
McSparrin, a 31-year veteran of the Bureau,
replaces Gerald Sopko, who retired from county service in September.
"When you lose someone like Jerry
Sopko, it's always difficult. But it's great to have a deep bench," said Commissioner
Chairman Tom Balya. "Marilyn McSparrin brings a wealth of experience, energy, and
enthusiasm to this challenging and high-profile position. I am confident that she will
serve the county's families well in her new capacity."
As director, McSparrin is responsible for
the overall management of the bureau, which consists of 92 employees and annually serves
about 4,000 families. The Children's Bureau administers programs mandated by federal and
state law to protect children from abuse and neglect, and establish permanency for those
children. The Bureau oversees treatment programs, in-home services, foster care, and
adoptions.
"Our Children's Bureau has made
tremendous advancements over the past several years to better serve our county's
families," Commissioner Tom Ceraso said. "Marilyn McSparrin is the perfect
choice for director to keep the momentum going."
McSparrin has worked in the County
Children's Bureau since 1972, beginning as a caseworker, before being promoted to
caseworker supervisor and caseworker manager. She has served as assistant director since
2001.
McSparrin has a Master's Degree in Adult
and Community Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she also earned her
undergraduate degree in psychology.
A Westmoreland County native, McSparrin
currently lives in Greensburg.
