Westmoreland County Launches New Web Site
Posted 02-17-2004
Tom Balya, chairman of the Westmoreland
County Board of Commissioners, today announced a revamped county web site to better serve
the citizens of Westmoreland County.
The new site can be accessed through at www.co.westmoreland.pa.us.
"The county's revamped web site is a
tremendous improvement over the previous site and will provide citizens the opportunity to
better interact with their government," Balya said. "This is part of our efforts
to keep Westmoreland County on the forefront of technology."
"There are many benefits to the new
site," Balya said. "The technology allows us to easily post information and
offers many new features, like a county calendar and electronic forms, not to mention a
much more attractive and user-friendly layout."
The new website utilizes a Dynamic Site
Framework (DSF) content management system -- the same technology used by the Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania's PA PowerPort web site. Westmoreland County was granted a free license
from the state's contractor to use the software, valued at approximately $100,000. The
County provided the necessary installation, support, and training.
The site offers information about the
county's various departments and services, including public meetings, elections, licenses,
and court-related documents.
For the first time since the Westmoreland
County web site went on-line in 1998, the county is devoting a single staff person to
serve as "webmaster." A single point of contact will help ensure that problems
are quickly identified and corrected, and that departmental staff is properly trained.
The county's Bureau of Parks and
Recreation, Industrial Development Corporation, and Controller's Office have been actively
updating content throughout the conversion process and offer a wealth of information for
visitors. Training is now underway for the remaining county departments.
"Over the next year, we will be
working with our various departments and the offices of elected officials to train key
staffers to ensure that the information posted on the site is timely and relevant,"
Balya said. "The web site will be dynamic, but is still in its infancy at this point.
We appreciate feedback and suggestions from residents for improvements."
