Commissioner Balya to Serve as Alternate Delegate to the
Democratic National Convention
Posted 07-19-2004
Westmoreland County Commissioner Tom Balya will serve as an alternate at the 2004
Democratic National Convention. The convention will take place July 26-29, 2004, in
Boston. Balya will join more than 4,353 delegates and alternates from every state and
territory to nominate John Kerry as the party's candidate for President of the United
States.
Balya received the most votes for alternate
delegate in the April 27 election to represent the 18th Congressional District, which is
comprised of parts of Westmoreland and Allegheny counties. As an alternate, Balya will be
responsible for casting votes in the event another delegate is unable to do so.
In addition to nominating the President and
Vice President, Balya and other members of the delegation will work on the Democratic
Party's National Platform, a statement of the party's priorities and principles for the
years to come.
The Democratic Party has a long and proud
history of representing and protecting the interests of working Americans and guaranteeing
personal liberties for all. The 2004 party platform is "Stronger at Home, Respected
in the World."
