Westmoreland County Announces Public Demonstration Schedule for New Voting Machines

Posted 04-04-2006

The Westmoreland County Board of Commissioners today announced a series of public demonstrations of the county's new electronic voting machines that will be used in the spring primary election.

"The commissioners understand that the best way to get voters comfortable with the new voting machines is hands-on experience," said Westmoreland County Elections Director Paula Pedicone. "County representatives will be at various locations throughout the county, leading up to the primary election, to try to expose as many people as possible to the equipment. I encourage all voters to take advantage of this opportunity to sample vote on the new machines."

The federal Help America Vote Act required counties to switch to electronic voting systems in time for the 2006 primary. Using federal grant money, Westmoreland County is purchasing 750 "iVotronic" voting machines to replace its 50-year old lever machines.

In addition to the public demonstration events, an on-line demo is available through the county website at www.co.westmoreland.pa.us.
