Westmoreland County Now Offering Free GIS Through Website
Posted 08-31-2006
The Westmoreland
County Board of Commissioners, Tom Balya, Tom Ceraso and Phil Light, today
announced the availability of an Internet-based Geographic Information
System (GIS) that increases access to public information.
The free GIS is available
on-line through the Westmoreland County homepage at
www.co.westmoreland.pa.us/gis.
The system was designed to meet
the current and future needs of county residents, in addition to helping
county government staff better perform essential work functions. The basic
level is free to the public and includes tools for mapping, printing and
querying tax assessment data in a user-friendly environment.
An enhanced level of access will
soon be available through a subscription service designed to meet the needs
of commercial clients. The subscription will allow users access to
additional functions and data layers, such as building footprints, data
extraction, measurement tools, buffering, and the ability to determine
latitude and longitude.
Visitors to the Courthouse may
use a kiosk-based version of the basic application at the public terminals
in the Tax Mapping Office. Visitors using the kiosks can perform all of the
functions of the basic level, along with plotting of tax maps in a larger
printer format.
Westmoreland County has moved many of its public access systems to the
Internet, making access easy for citizens. The new GIS website is one of the
latest advances that addresses the county's goal to readily share public
information. |
