County Seeks Volunteers to Help Transport
Veterans
Posted 4-19-07
Westmoreland County is seeking volunteers to assist local
veterans. Drivers are needed to support the Volunteer
Transportation Network program that provides free transportation
for veterans in need of medical treatment.
"This is a terrific opportunity for veterans to
help their brothers in arms," said Veterans' Affairs Director
John Panichella. "There are many veterans who rely on this
transportation program to receive necessary medical treatments
at the proper veterans' facilities. We owe it to them to make
sure they have the ability to get there, and I fully expect our
veterans' community to embrace this opportunity."
"I am confident that there are many veterans in
our county who recognize the value of volunteerism and the need
to help their fellow veterans," added County Commissioner
Chairman Tom Balya. "And though our search is not restricted to
veterans, it is our logical preference."
The Volunteer Transportation Network,
co-sponsored by the county and the state Department of Veterans
Affairs, operates between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.,
Monday through Friday, and provides service for scheduled
appointments. It is not a substitute for ambulance service.
Successful candidates must have a valid drivers
license and complete a criminal background check and
driver-specific training, among other requirements.
