Westmoreland County Completes Final Phase of Major Employment Zone;
Opening of Technology Park II Creates Hundreds of New Job Opportunities
Posted 10-9-08
The Westmoreland County Industrial Development
Corporation's (WCIDC) Board of Directors, County Commissioners
Tom Balya, Tom Ceraso, and Kim Ward, today joined state and
local officials to mark the opening of the county's newest
industrial park, Westmoreland Technology Park II.
The park, located in East Huntingdon and
Hempfield Townships, further bolsters Westmoreland County's
major employment zone surrounding the Sony Technology Center.
The new park is expected to employ an additional 1,200 workers
for manufacturing, service and distribution.
Joining the County Commissioners at today's
ribbon-cutting ceremony were the area's legislative delegation
and state Department of Community Economic Development Secretary
Dennis Yablonsky.
"Having sites up-and-ready for business can make
the difference for a company choosing a location," Secretary
Yablonsky said. "The tough economy makes continued use of this
kind of strategic investment in our infrastructure more
important than ever."
The 17-parcel, 120-acre industrial park features
three "pad-ready" lots ranging in size from five to 31 acres
complete with public utilities and earthmoving to a finished
grade. Easy access to US Route 119, Interstate 70, Toll 66 and
the PA Turnpike makes transportation quick and inexpensive.
Another feature of the park is a 16-acre parcel designated for
commercial development at the intersection of Technology Drive
and SR 3093 that will offer amenities such as shopping and
dining.
"This area serves as the centerpiece of our
efforts to create viable employment opportunities for workers in
Westmoreland County and throughout our region," said County
Commissioner Chairman Tom Balya. "The excellent highway access,
rail-service, multiple gas suppliers, and ample water and sewage
capacity makes this area attractive to all types of businesses."
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania contributed
more than $5 million in grants and low-interest loans toward the
$8 million project. The WCIDC provided the balance of the
funding.
The new park joins the previous WCIDC
developments in the immediate area -- Westmoreland Technology
Park I, Westmoreland Distribution Park East & West, Westmoreland
Distribution Park and the Westmoreland Rail Freight Intermodal
Terminal. These developments are in addition to the Sony
Technology Center, Commonwealth Renewable Energy (CRE) and
DeLallo's Distribution Center.
Having acquired the first lot in the park, Vale
Vista Associates is currently constructing a 40,000-square-foot
office building that will employ more than 100 workers.
