Census Topic of Mayor Meeting
Posted 1-22-2000
At a recently held meeting of the Westmoreland County Mayors, conducted by Westmoreland
County Commissioner Tom Balya, a U.S. Census Bureau representative briefed the mayors on
what to expect in the upcoming census and what is needed by community leaders to get an
accurate count. Guy Matarazzo, Greensburg District Office Manager, spoke of the importance
of organizing community efforts to promote census participation, the strategy that the
Census Bureau will use to effectively get an accurate count, and he laid out a timetable
for this year's census.
"The Census Bureau is actively waging
a public relations campaign to get communities involved in the census process. Forms will
be sent out to homes first before we go door to door," said Matarazzo. "We are
urging local municipalities along with the County to create complete count committees that
will help Westmoreland County in its efforts to make sure every individual is accounted
for," he continued.
Commissioner Balya enforced Mr. Matarazzo's
presentation by saying, "It is absolutely critical in so many ways, that we ensure
every citizen of our county is counted. As leaders of your community, I urge you to
actively promote census participation." He continued by adding, "We must be
certain your communities, and our county receive its fair share of federal support and the
representation it deserves."
State Legislator and City of Monessen Mayor
Ted Harhai hosted the event in Monessen. He welcomed the fifteen mayors from all over the
county, and highlighted the growth activity in Monessen including the Riverfront
Industrial Park, and the new Rite Aid store. Mayor Harhai also stated that his police
force has taken a hard line in combating street level drug dealing. |
