Balya Will Lead Commission
Posted 9-28-1999
Westmoreland County Commissioner Tom Balya was elected to lead the
Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission and the Southwestern Pennsylvania
Corporation (SPC) at SPC's annual meeting on Monday, December 6, 1999. He
assumes the chair from Armstrong County Commissioner James Scahill, whose
term expired on Monday.
The Southwestern Pennsylvania
Commission is the region's transportation planning, economic development and
business retention agency. It includes representatives of the City of
Pittsburgh, and nine counties -- Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler,
Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington, and Westmoreland.
"SPC has a tremendous
responsibility in working to move southwestern Pennsylvania forward, and to
insure that our infrastructure and economic development projects, not only
make us competitive, but create better opportunities for future
generations," said Balya. "I will work hard with leaders throughout the
region so that SPC plans for a wise, productive use of available resources,"
he added.
Washington County
Commissioner Bracken Burns was elected Vice-Chairman of the two
organizations, and City of Pittsburgh Planning Director Eloise Hirsh
maintains the position of Commission Secretary-Treasurer. The Corporation is
the operating company for the Commission and the owner and operator of the
Regional Enterprise Tower in Pittsburgh. |
